Description
This book is an attempt to develop a dialogue between the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, Jean Porter's Thomistic theory of the natural law, and the virtue of solidarity as expressed in Catholic Social Teaching. It seeks to explore the implications that such a dialogue would have for our understanding of moral reasoning.
Attentiveness to Vulnerability rests on the hypothesis that it is possible to develop a set of robust links between these thinkers and bodies of thought--markedly different as they are in terms of philosophical disposition and framework. Such links specify the ethical implications of Levinas' thought and develop Porter's theory in an original way. This work requires further specification through a developed anthropology, which allows for expansion within the tradition of Catholic theological ethics. The inclusion of Levinas and a focus on the virtue of solidarity allows for an advancement of virtue theory and theological ethics, to the extent that the virtue of solidarity becomes a key aspect of any ethical reasoning.

Daniel J. Fleming es director de Etica en St. Vincent's Health Australia y profesor adjunto de Etica en la Facultad de Medicina de la Universidad de Notre Dame Australia. Fleming es doctor en Filosofia Moral y Teologia y autor de mas de cincuenta publicaciones academicas y mediaticas sobre etica teologica, etica de la atencion sanitaria y educacion moral. Es miembro activo de la red Etica Teologica Catolica en la Iglesia Mundial (CTEWC) y copreside la mesa virtual de la CTEWC sobre el tema de los abusos en la Iglesia junto con James F. Keenan, SJ.
James F. Keenan, SJ, es titular de la catedra Canisius, director del Instituto Jesuita y vicerrector de cooperacion global en el Boston College. Ademas de ser un distinguido academico, con mas de veinticinco libros y trescientos articulos publicados, es fundador de la red CTEWC. Su libro mas reciente es A History of Catholic Theological Ethics (Paulist, 2022). Licenciado y doctorado por la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana de Roma, Keenan es sacerdote jesuita desde 1982.
Hans Zollner, SJ, es director y profesor del Instituto de Antropologia y estudios interdisciplinares sobre la dignidad humana y el cuidado de las personas vulnerables (IADC), en la Pontificia Universidad Gregoriana de Roma. Es miembro de la Comision Pontificia para la Proteccion de los Menores desde su creacion en 2014.
