Ruth First's "117 Days" recounts the harrowing war of nerves conducted between a Ninety-Day detainee and her South African Special Branch interrogators. Her sparsely written and unique record was first published - as her husband, Joe Slovo, remarked - so that it 'would help focus world attention on the plight of the growing number of victims of the regime's physical and mental torture chamber'.
