Introduction to Biomaterials

The subject area of biomaterials has been developing rapidly as the many medical devices and implants have increased over the years. Biomaterials have a great many medical applications such as artificial hearts and valves, joint replacements, suture materials, device encapsulation, drug delivery systems, and bone reconstruction. This book will be a primary textbook for upper level courses on the subject and will provide an introduction to the fundamental principles of biomaterials, an overview of the current applications, and a discussion of the emerging technologies in biomaterials research. The basic concepts in materials science are presented along with the appropriate biochemistry and immunology principles. Important issues in the selection, design, manufacturing, and evaluation of biomaterials will be included.
