Description
In Living Christ, Peter Feldmeier explores the Gospels as the premier revelation of the person, ministry, and salvation of Jesus Christ. Uniting biblical scholarship with a deep spiritual engagement with the Gospels, Feldmeier shows how the biblical word can access the prophetic words and saving work of Jesus to make them one's own. Each Gospel provides a unique interpretation of Christ and a distinctive expression of Christian discipleship. Feldmeier takes the reader slowly through each text so that they may richly engage the truths witnessed by the evangelists and become opportunities for interior transformation. Drawing on traditional and modern commentaries, as well as his own reflections, Feldmeier shows how the Gospels are essential in their own ways in coming to an intimate relationship with Christ and an authentic appropriation of biblical discipleship.
Reviews / Votes
"Although there are many good books that introduce us to the Four Gospels, they rarely focus on the spirituality of the Gospels; that is, what the Gospels mean for our lives in Christ. Father Peter Feldmeier has admirably filled that need by providing us with a reliable reading of the Four Gospels that shows how they call us to live our lives in, with, and for Christ. This book will be of immense value to all who want a better understanding of how the story of each Gospel calls them to Christian holiness."Frank J. Matera, Professor Emeritus, The Catholic University of America "Pope Francis has frequently reminded Christians that we need to renew our approaches to scripture and to be challenged by the radicality of Jesus's preaching in the gospels. Too often Christians have become complacent with tired interpretations and preconceptions about the gospels. In this book, Peter Feldmeier offers readers a way to engage with the gospels in a deep, theologically rich, and pragmatic way that answers Pope Francis's call to spiritual renewal. No matter how well you think you know the Gospels, Feldmeier invites us to rethink our assumptions in order to enter into the word of God with new eyes and an open heart. I highly recommend this book, not only for Christians looking for a great scriptural resource but also for preachers seeking new inspiration."
Daniel P. Horan, OFM, Professor of Philosophy, Religious Studies, and Theology at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana
"Through a masterful weaving of scholarship, theological insight, and spiritual wisdom, Peter Feldmeier leads us on a new type of adventure through the gospels. He walks us through each of the four gospels, providing opportunities to learn anew not only the power of engaging the living Word of God, but perhaps more valuably, the power of a vocation to 'live Christ.'"
Virginia Herbers, author of Gifts from Friends We've Yet to Meet "There is much to be gained from Living Christ. It not only provides a deeper understanding of the historical Christ, but it shows us how the Word can transform our present lives and inspire us to a deeper communion with Jesus."
Catholic Books Review "Feldmeier traces the ministry and teaching of Jesus in each Gospel, inviting readers to reflect on their personal encounter with the content."
The Bible Today "A valuable contribution to a better understanding of both Scripture and Christ."
Benedictines "Living Christ is a satisfying and helpful resource, reflecting current scholarship in an accessible manner. This book is highly recommended for anyone desiring a deeper experience of the New Testament, but especially for clergy and those preparing for or engaged in ministry."
