This text provides an analysis of how academic staff in universities are managed. It reviews developments in higher education policy in 15 countries and examines their impact on the academic profession. Whilst rates of change differ, the massifying, marketizing, and managerializing of higher education are universal, international phenomena. With strategic attempts being made to re-engineer an increasingly diverse, functionally-differentiated academic profession, there are signs of an emerging but uneven "flexi-university" model of academic employment. Indicators of this phenomenon include the casualization of academic work, widening pay differentials, institutional pay scales, decentralized pay bargaining, and individualizing of the employment relationship.
