Description
Rügen is Germany's largest island by area and one of its most popular holiday destinations.
Most visitors come to Rügen during summer for the Baltic Sea and the beaches and for the popular seaside resorts like Sassnitz, Binz and Sellin (which ist also well known for its pier). There exists a historic narrow-gauge railway employing steam locomotives, called the Rasender Roland (Racing Roland). Other famous tourist destinations are Cape Arkona, the Jasmund National Park with wood-covered hills and impressive chalk cliffs (the most popular one is the Königsstuhl), the wood-covered Granitz hills with their hunting lodge, the classicist buildings of Putbus and the inland villages of Bergen auf Rügen, Ralswiek and Gingst. Even in winter Rügen is well appreciated for its quiet atmosphere.
