Am Anfang war das Wort. Genauer: ein Gerücht, das Max Eulitz im Jahr 2019 einen Flieger nach Kiew besteigen ließ. Er folgte der Fama von einem aufstrebenden neuen Technoclub - namenlos, aber voller Versprechen. Während einer Residenz am Goethe-Institut Kiew beobachtete er, wie sich eine gewaltige Brauerei aus Sowjetzeiten in einen Club ohne Namen verwandelte - ein Zentrum der Subkultur, wild entschlossen, es mit den großen Tanzkathedralen der westlichen Welt aufzunehmen.
Notes on 41 versammelt eine Reihe von Essays, die jene Umstände schildern, unter denen dieser Club entstanden ist und umreißt dabei die strukturellen Herausforderungen und den historischen Kontext, die diesem Ort in der Kiewer Post-Maidan-Landschaft eine solche Dynamik verleihen. Das Baudenkmal und seine Metamorphose waren dabei im Zentrum der Recherchen und stehen pars pro toto für die Komplexität der sozialen und politischen Gesamtlage in der gegenwärtigen Ukraine.

In the beginning was the word. Or rather, a rumour that put Max Eulitz on a flight to Kyiv in 2019. He was following the chatter about an ambitious new techno club: one without a name, yet full of promise. During a residency at the Goethe-Institut Kyiv, Eulitz witnessed the transformation of a massive, Soviet-era brewery into this no-name club-a centre of subculture intent on rivalling the best techno churches of the Western world. This landmark site, and the implications of its historical transmutation into such a space, became the focus of his research. Notes on 41 is a collection of essays illustrating the circumstances surrounding the creation of this nightclub.
The book outlines structural challenges and the historical context, which imbue this site with such vitality, in Kyiv's post-Maidan landscape. The issues raised consider the complexity of the sociopolitical situation in Ukraine.
