Description
The Encyclopedia of Endocrine Diseases, Third Edition, Five Volume Set is an essential one-stop reference exploring physiological, clinical diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of a wide range of endocrine and endocrine-related metabolic diseases. This edition incorporates ground-breaking research that has occurred in the last 8 years particularly in molecular mechanisms such as mutations, epigenetics and signaling, environmental effects on homeostasis, and the pathogenesis of common endocrine diseases including endocrine malignancies, obesity, and diabetes.
Among the most complex constructs in the body, the endocrine system sends chemical signals to specific receptors in other parts of the body, eliciting intracellular signaling pathways as their biological effect. The endocrine system regulates numerous processes including metabolism, biological cycles, internal fluid volume, reproduction and growth to maintain body homeostasis. However, the ways in which endocrine functioning can go awry are numerous. Providing over 420 updated articles, this 5 volume edition of Encyclopedia of Endocrine Diseases explores the extensive spectrum of metabolic and endocrine disease, capturing new diagnosis techniques, treatment methods and understanding of endocrine pathogenesis.
This text, unique in its vast coverage and clear layout, is not only an indispensable resource for clinical professionals and researchers in endocrinology, but also accessible to advanced and undergraduate students.

His clinical specialty is chemical pathology. He is the author of more than seven hundred peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters on basic and clinical reproductive endocrinology, as well as the monograph Good and Bad Testosterone (Elsevier, 2024). He has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals, including as Editor-in-Chief of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology (Elsevier). He has also edited books in the fields of reproductive endocrinology and andrology.
He has received several honours for his research, including the NIH International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (Fogarty Foundation), the Centre of Excellence Award of the Academy of Finland, the Young Investigator Award of the American Society of Andrology, the Matti AEyraepaeae Award of the Finnish Medical Society Duodecim, and honorary doctorates from the Medical University of Lodz (Poland), Albert Szent-Gyoergyi Medical University (Szeged, Hungary), and the University of Tartu (Estonia). Additional distinctions include the Egon Diczfalusy Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, the Iain McIntyre Medal (Queen Mary University of London), the European Medal of the Society for Endocrinology (UK), and the European Hormone Medal of the European Society of Endocrinology. He is an honorary member of the Finnish Endocrine Society, the European Society of Endocrinology, and the European Academy of Andrology.
Named lectureships include the German Endocrine Society Berthold Medal and Prize Lecture, the Australian Society for Reproductive Biology Goding Lecture, the Nordic Association for Andrology Erik Blom Lecture, and the American Society of Andrology-EAA Exchange Lecture. He is an elected member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, the UK Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Order of the White Rose of Finland (Knight, First Class).
