Description
Following on from an extensive research programme undertaken by the London TECs between 1998 and 2001, this text presents a broad introduction to the forces shaping London's economy and labour market. The volume addresses major structural aspects of the London economy such as the decline of manufacturing, the rise of the knowledge/network/new economy, competition for jobs between residents and commuters, unemployment and exclusion. Particular emphasis is placed on skills issues, which are seen as a key to economic development activity and a centrepiece of government policy. The book sets the skills agenda in the context of other economic issues. Other new approaches include the enormous potential of ethnic minority-owned businesses and other emerging sectors such as new media.
