Description
Probably no other Israeli citizen has been so deeply involved in so many aspects of his country's modern history, known so many famous figures at home or abroad, or - and this is of prime importance - is such a vivid and effective writer. Abba Eban's Heritage, the companion volume to a 1984 TV series covering the history of the Jews to the founding of Israel in 1948, was a major bestseller. Now Personal Witness brings the story up to the present, supported by another TV series, and enriched by Eban's own experience of the era he chronicles. Here are wonderful vignettes of stirring and dangerous events, along with intimate views on American presidents from Truman to Bush, leaders from De Gaulle to Churchill to Thatcher, and Israelis from Ben Gurion to Rabin. Throughout, Eban's voice is both personal and eloquent, his perspective informed and humane. Personal Witness is indispensable as history, irresistable as memoir.
