Lost Subs

Using text and powerful photographs, this work chronicles the fate of some of the most famous submarines in naval history: from the sinking of the Confederate Army's submarine "Hunley" during the American Civil War, to the recent tragic loss of the advanced Russian submarine "Kursk". Using a wealth of archival material, Dunmore brings to life the museum of submarines resting in their underwater graves and the submariners on the "eternal patrol". Among the most moving tales are those of submarines that have been lost with all hands on board - such as the nuclear attack submarines "USS Thresher" and "USS Scorpion", and most recently, the Soviet submarine "Kursk", on which a note was found from a dying soldier saying "We can't get out".
