Description
Farnham, situated in Surrey, is a town of great historical interest. Old buildings, Georgian houses and the great Farnham Castle are peppered around the area, acting as a heritage trail for all those living in or visiting the area. Not far from the centre of Farnham, more heritage finds arise and Waverley Abbey, Moor Park House and Mother Ludlam's Cave are all available to be explored. Farnham played a key role in the Civil War; the castle became a rallying point for Royalists and the Roundhead garrison was installed there in the early 1640s. In later centuries, Farnham developed into a thriving market town. New industries evolved, including wool, cloth, hops, wheat and greenware pottery, which still exists on the outskirts of the town. During the twentieth century and after the Second World War, Farnham's population has expanded greatly and there is a real sense of community in the town. It wasn't so long ago that the people of Farnham were clubbing together to raise enough money to buy the maltings in order to turn it into a community centre.
Travel-writer and freelance photographer Paul Doyle charts these changes and developments that Farnham has seen through a fantastic selection of old and modern photographs to be enjoyed by both residents and visitors alike.
