Law Enforcement: An Insider's View addresses four major issues: (1) How the police function has evolved; (2) What it takes to become a full-fledged law enforcement officer; (3) On-the-street activities; and (4) Off-the-street issues. The author blends his classroom experience with his law enforcement training to provide the reader with a unique view of the streets through the eyes of a cop and the mind of a professor. This combination lends to an informed view of how things are supposed to be done in theory with how things really get done out in the field. Traditional topics discussed: agency organization, personnel recruitment and selection, pre-service training, criminal law, search and seizure, use of force, policy guidelines, stress. Non-traditional topics discussed: career preparation, training practices, personal adjustments to sworn status, choosing an appropriate course of action, how organizational mandates affect the job-holder. William G. Doerner, Ph.D., has been a faculty member in the School of Criminology & Criminal Justice at Florida State University since 1977, as well as serving as a part-time sworn law enforcement officer for the Tallahassee Police Department since 1980.
Dr. Doerner is the author of numerous criminal justice related books and articles.
