Description
This book traces trends and development in Asian economies, motorization and urbanization and their implications in Asia over the last thirty years. During this period, the region saw an explosion in the growth of Asian economies and cities, and in the use of motor vehicles. A study conducted by the authors for the World Bank and UNDPO in the latter's Programme for Economic Reform through Enhanced Transport and communications, which sought to develop a generic urban transport strategy for middle-sized cities in Asia and the Pacific region, is the primary source for this work.
The authors convincingly propose a greater public sector-led strategic intervention and investment in the urban transport sector as an agent of urban sustainable development rather than as a sector in itself. Offering a generic framework for urban transport policy making, planning and management that supports the vision of sustainable urban development as well as a desciption of how this strategy could be operationalized, this book will be of interest to students, professionals and scholars.
