Beyond materials

The Swiss research institute Empa conducts materials research and develops new technologies with which to drive innovation. On a strong scientific foundation, findings and discoveries are developed into prototypes that demonstrate new applications and solutions. The book presents Empa as a modern research institute, but also explores its roots and its transformation from a traditional materials testing institute founded in 1880. What has remained the same despite Empa's fundamental transformation is its role as an interface between science and business, one that aims to anticipate and tackle future challenges for the benefit of Swiss industry and the good of society.
