Emergence and Adaptation

This volume unites papers in speech communication and language development which were presented as a broad interdisciplinary spectrum of all aspects of vocal communication at a Symposium held in honor of Bjoern Lindblom. These papers deal with the acoustic patterning of speech, its perceptual processing, the biology of communication, and motor processes, including animal communication, language acquisition as well as sound structures in the languages of the world. They look at the emergence of sound structures in the child and the adaptation of these structures in speech production and speech perception of adult language users under anatomical, physiological, physical, linguistic, social and situational constraints. Phoneticians, linguists, psychologists, communication scientists, biophysicists, and zoologists will all find important contributions to their own fields, of great current value, and from a truly interdisciplinary perspective.
