Description
This is a textbook for vocabulary-building courses. The book is primarily intended to help students improve their vocabulary skills by teaching the basic units of written English vocabulary. Drawing extensively on the methods and results of modern linguistics, especially word analysis. Leben and Denning provide the student with the necessary tools to acquire an effective understanding of learned, specialized and scientific vocabulary. The text also includes brief introductions to the history of English, language change and the basics of phonetics, to facilitate, supplement, and enrich the student of vocabulary elements. Structured so as to be useable in any of several different kinds of curricula with differing time constraints and differing degrees of intensity and scope, the book can serve as a core text in courses in English vocabulary (specifically, scientific, or general), verbal aptitude examination preparation, English grammar (first or second language), or scientific writing. Each chapter refers to a list of morphemes contained in an appendix, which the student then uses to complete the exercises assigned by the instructor.
