Description
"Quonset Hut" uses many charming images to presents a unique subject area in popular history. This is the first full-length publication on the "Quonset hut". It is a social as well as an architectural history. The popular subject is: mobile housing in the US of the 1940s and 1950s. "Quonset Hut" is the story of the Quonset hut from its humble origin as WWII military housing and storage, to its remarkable transformation into a post-war American pop culture icon. Included are Quonset huts from all 50 states that run the gamut in form and use. There are churches, homes, barracks, banks and restaurants - some elaborately decorated and others stripped bare. "Quonset Hut" is a lively mix of photographs and memorabilia such as advertisements, toys, games, comics, television shows and even engineering exams. The first and only comprehensive book on the subject, "Quonset Hut" places these unique structures in an architectural, cultural and historical context.
