Description
The updated Bradt North Cyprus guidebook, now in its tenth edition, remains the only English-language guide from a major publisher that is dedicated to the fascinating and beautiful northern region of the eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Steeped in history, soaked in sunshine, North Cyprus gives deeply to those who want to delve into the past or are keen to explore untouched landscapes by foot or on two wheels as well as to those preferring to pull up a sunbed and simply relax.
Thoroughly revised by seasoned travel writers who have explored North Cyprus with fresh eyes, the updated Bradt North Cyprus guidebook offers everything you need for a successful trip, from pre-departure and background information including when to visit, red tape, safety, history and culture to accommodation, restaurants, shopping, festivals, transport and money. Detailed travel advice - focusing on where to go and what to see - is broken down into four geographical areas: Girne (Kyrenia), Lefkos?a (Nicosia), Gazimag?usa (Famagusta) and the Karpas Peninsula.
As the updated Bradt North Cyprus guidebook demonstrates, there is a wealth of things to see and do:
. Girne remains the most attractive harbour on the whole island, while Lefkosa's old quarter exudes the ambience of an old Middle Eastern trading post;
. Timeless Gazimag?usa is fringed with some excellent beaches, yet is also close to North Cyprus's most revered historic site, Salamis;
. Superb hiking or biking opportunities abound in the Kyrenian Mountains;
. Explore Buffavento or other Crusader castles (St Hilarion reputedly inspired the castle in Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty), stroll through the cloisters of Bellapais Abbey, or shop till you drop in Buyykonuk's markets;
. Alternatively, go barefoot on the golden sands of the Karpas Peninsula, watch wildlife (including orchids, birds that breed nowhere else and nesting turtles) or take advantage of the burgeoning opportunities for sustainable travel and wellness retreats.
Most enchantingly of all, as the updated Bradt North Cyprus guidebook makes abundantly clear, this region - in delightful contrast to the general pace of modern life - changes only slowly, and its laidback daily rhythms and long months of abundant sunshine invite everyone into the holiday mood.

Diana Darke first became interested in the Near East when she read Arabic at Oxford. She has lived, worked and travelled extensively in Turkey and the Arab world, initially with the Foreign Office, then as an Arabic consultant. Work and pleasure have taken her to both sides of Cyprus on many occasions. She is also the author of Bradt guides to Oman, Syria and eastern Turkey.
Huw and Caitlin Hennessy are seasoned travel writers with worldwide experience - from Iceland to Auckland, Jamestown to Queenstown, Belfast to Bangkok. Between them the Hennessys have already updated Bradt's guidebooks to Colombia, Paraguay, Mozambique and Saint Helena, written three Bradt guidebooks about cycling routes and worked on travel guides for Dorling Kindersley, AA, Michelin, Rough Guides, Berlitz and Insight Guides. In updating Bradt's North Cyprus guidebook, the Hennessys have applied their keen interest in wildlife, ecotourism and adventure travel to explore these exciting aspects of the country's offerings, which - alongside a rich historical backdrop and burgeoning sustainable-travel opportunities - help set it apart from the more mainstream south of the island.
