Description
With the recent discussion regarding Paul and justification, there
is a renewed interest in, and appreciation of, the Greco-Roman
background of the New Testament. Special care has been taken to
examine Paul's writings in light of the cultural evidence and its impact
on various interpretations. This latest study was written out of the
desire to demonstrate, through exegetical and historical avenues, the
significance of the Greco-Roman background on the Apostle Paul's
use of pistis. This careful work looks to the canon of Scripture and
other historical sources to determine the origins and developments
of Paul's use of pistis, especially in the cultural Sitz im Leben of
the Apostle's original audience. It is argued that Paul's use of pistis
presents a unique development and progression from the former
uses of this concept of faith. In addition, his usage sheds light on the
study of the New Testament.
