Description
The text of this introduction to engineering materials selection has been modified to include recent information on material development. The chapter on joining has been widened to include a more detailed consideration of the welding abilities of steels, plastics and adhesion. The properties and use of non-metallic materials and high temperature materials are examined, and the section on materials for aircraft structures has been revised to include a consideration of aluminium-lithium and magnesium and its alloys. A new chapter on materials for automobile structures has been included as a method of introducing a consideration of a typical field in which there is growing competition between the traditional use of steel and the increasing application of reinforced polymers. The development of new computer databases for materials and associated materials selection programs are outlined, and investigative case studies are included at the end of the text.
