After completing RN training in Princess Alexandra School of Nursing, London, Dr Cooke worked on a trauma and orthopaedic ward, then completed Midwifery training in Enfield School of Nursing and Midwifery, and The Mother's Hospital London St Bartholomew's and London Hospital Group. She was a Staff Nurse for three years in Hackney Hospital Accident and Emergency Department (St Bartholomew's and London Group) before taking up Junior then Senior Sister posts in Hackney Hospital (Gynaecology) Barking and Havering Hospital (Surgery Unit) and then Ward Manager. Dr Cooke was invited to join the hospital's School of Nursing, then form a joint appointment between the Redbridge School of Nursing and Midwifery and University of East London, whereafter she held a full post for five further years. Dr Cooke moved to Cambridgeshire and was offered a post as Senior Lecturer, then a short term (3yrs) Head of Nursing and Midwifery Research between University of Cambridge Homerton College and Addenbrookes' Trust as assistant to the Chief Nurse. Having been invited to apply for a post at University Sheffield School of Nursing and Midwifery, she then moved to Manchester in 2008. Dr Cooke has maintained an active clinical role in Emergency Care, and an interest in research into the impact of health policy on the outcomes of decisions, especially economic decisions, within nursing and health care.
