Description
In its first two editions 'Second Language Learning and Language Teaching' has been a world-wide best-seller, and is admired for its ability to show students interested in becoming language teachers the relevance of second language learning research and theory.
The 3rd edition has been prepared following feedback from teachers using the first two editions. It offers a much fuller discussion of language teaching and, in particular, highlights some of the places where second language acquisition research contradicts standard language teaching beliefs by analysing some standard TEFL handbooks and coursebooks from different countries. In addition, there is increased emphasis on the importance of the student's becoming an independent L2 user. Despite the extensive updating and revision, the broad framework and approach of the successful second edition have been maintained.

Reviews / Votes
This much needed book will be an excellent text for courses in Language Acquisition within second language teacher education programs. There is a wealth of new knowledge, new vocabulary, and new perspectives which not only contribute to specialized aspects of teacher training but will enrich students' general education as wellPatsy Lightbrown, Professor of Applied Linguistics
Vivian Cook aims to provide a book which is not too academic, and which is relevant to the classroom teacher; he has succeeded admirably. And although intended for teachers, this book should also prove interesting to anyone who has ever themselves attempted to learn a foreign language.
Language International
...a very valuable text for foreign language teachers and those in training and should feature...on reading lists of initial teacher education courses.
