Description
Published in association with the Regional Science Association, this book introduces the range of powerful quantitative techniques and models for the study of population change at local and regional levels that have recently been developed by the cross fertilization of research from different disciplines, including demography, economics and information technology. The focus of the book is on presenting and articulating sophisticated modelling techniques and illustrating their results with real data. The first section of the book deals with modelling population change in local areas. The second section considers new approaches to population forecasting in the context of economic change, and illustrates econometric prediction of fertility and migration. Part three discusses the concept of local information systems and the use of population databases for population monitoring and forecasting. Part four addresses new theoretical departures in population study and the final part is concerned with modelling the causes and effect of migration on a regional and local scale.
