Description
This title was first published in 2001. The author provides a fresh perspective of the implications of policy transfer for standard accounts of policy formulation. By presenting original case studies of public management reforms in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore, it is an important addition to our understanding of the development of New Public Management (NPM) outside Western liberal democracies. This book challenges established ideas that the NPM has been globalized based on extrapolations made from experiences of a handful of Western liberal democracies, notably Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Moreover, the book contains the first multi-state study of the process of policy transfer. Particularly useful for political scientists, business and management scholars, academics of international relations and economics.
Reviews / Votes
'...an erudite and timely book. The result is a fascinating theory-based empirical study that is to be recommended to those in the fields of business and management, political science, area studies, public policy and administration, and social policy.' Andrew Massey, University of Portsmouth, UK '...this is a valuable contribution to the literature on public management, and on resistance to globalization, in South East Asia.' Asia Pacific Business Review 'Schiefelbusch and Dienel demonstrate with this book, that participation in public transport is important and can lead to improvement of its quality. Especially impressive is the interdisciplinary approach of the book and the merging aspects from law, sociology or planning studies into a readable book for practitioners and scholars interested in public transportation.'
