Description
This step-by-step guide shows teachers and administrators how to implement a proactive schoolwide discipline plan in individual schools and throughout school districts. Originally developed from a five-year federally-funded project (Project PREPARE) at the University of Oregon, this information was initially field-tested in over 60 schools across the country. Steps for Developing a Proactive Schoolwide Discipline Plan explicitly guides education practitioners in understanding the importance of effective discipline plans, discussing why collaboration is critical in any discipline plan's success, and providing a practical six-step procedure for effective preparation and implementation of schoolwide behavior discipline plans.
Reviews / Votes
"The reader comes away with a clear understanding of student learning occurring as a result of a well-implemented, well-maintained proactive schoolwide discipline plan." -- Craig Knotts, Administrator "An excellent contribution to the education field. Clearly written and easy to follow." -- Susan Okeson, Principal "Fills an important gap in the literature, providing a 'how-to' manual for implementing an effective and sustainable schoolwide intervention plan. The worksheets and checklists will prove invaluable for those building schoolwide systems." -- Cynthia M. Anderson, Associate Professor of School Psychology "Outlines how to define, teach, acknowledge, and measure the positive social behavior in a school. Major strengths include the careful attention to collecting and using data for decision making, and the thoughtful attention to ensuring that procedures are implemented in a sustainable manner." -- Rob Horner, Professor "Provides an excellent resource for educators who are rethinking school discipline by moving from ineffective 'get tough' practices toward a more supportive, instruction-based approach. Building on the current knowledge base and his own wealth of experience, Colvin has authored an easy-to-read, step-by-step guide that will be a great resource to school-based teams as they attempt to build environments that better serve all students, including those at risk." -- Tim Lewis, Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies "Should be mandatory reading for all those planning to enter the teaching profession. Colvin's approach has transformed our schools into positive places for learning." -- Carol Comeau, Superintendent "Grab the book with one hand and a member of your team with the other. You are about to embark on a great adventure, one that will support you in making a real difference in the ways you grow children." -- Nancy J. Franklin, Coordinator of Behavior Support "One of the most important texts on the systemic management of student behavior to date that could possibly be placed in the hands of a school administrator. Not only offers the nuts and bolts of a well-designed student management system, but also provides the reader with a pragmatic, evidence-based approach to organizational change." -- Joe Olmi, Associate Professor and Center Director "True to his best practices approach, Colvin has organized and applied systems and organizational change strategies to enable schools to identify, adopt, adapt, establish, and maintain effective behavior management practices for all students and staff members. Using his vast array of school and classroom experiences, this book is Colvin's comprehensive presentation of the whats, whys, and hows of effective schoolwide discipline." -- From the Foreword by George Sugai "Guides the administrator and leadership team to organize the necessary development, definition, and implementation of a behavior plan that enhances school climate." -- Principal Magazine, November/December 2007More details
