Description
This accessible text, now in its second edition, explains the key principles of transmission lines using straightforward mathematics, extensive illustrations and practical worked examples. The early chapters use a lossless equivalent circuit to derive the basic theory, demonstrating how pulses and sine waves perform in simple transmission line circuits. Later chapters develop this model by demonstrating the derivation of circuit parameters, and the use of Maxwell's equations to extend this theory to major transmission lines. The second edition has been revised and expanded to emphasise the role of electromagnetic waves and photons in all transmission lines, providing valuable insight into the fundamental physics. New topics include sine waves in the time domain, multiple junctions, and attenuation in the presence of standing waves. Covering DC to optical frequencies, this book is an invaluable resource for students, researchers and professionals in electrical, microwave and optical engineering as well as applied physics.

'It's very pleasing to see a second edition of this very important book on electromagnetic transmission lines, now well established as a reference text for today's high-frequency electrical engineering communities. It contains invaluable information about the factors that need to be considered when using transmissions lines in many of today's application areas, such as telecommunications and high-frequency electronics. This new edition contains several additional features likely to be of benefit to the reader. These include coverage of attenuation in the presence of standing waves and propagation in waveguides below cut-off, and a fresh look at the properties of photons to achieve a deeper understanding of electromagnetic propagation. The book is very suitable for undergraduate and graduate-level students, and beyond.' Nick Ridler, National Physical Laboratory (NPL) 'Transmissions lines are fundamental to radio frequency, microwave, terahertz and optical systems. After a lifetime working with transmission line theory and applications, the author is considered one of the great research and pedagogical scholars in this subject. The first edition provided refreshing, in-depth coverage of the essential aspects of transmission lines, and this updated text seamlessly integrates more contemporary topics to add greater breadth to our understanding. The book is ideally suited to students studying electrical and electronic engineering and physics at all levels, while also acting as a go-to reference for engineers and scientists working in both academia and industry.'
