Description
This expose investigates current health policies, the NHS and the attitudes of general practitioners. It argues that community health suffers because the drugs industry has a multi-million pound vested interest in illness and that government policies work towards political ends rather than public welfare. The study reveals how doctors are taught never to admit their ignorance and to rationalize the withholding of information which many people would say the patient has a right to know. The author also contends that doctors are out of touch and are often unable to communicate properly with their patients. To support this theory, the author shows how the Department of Health, the schools of medicine and the prescribing doctors have all been undermined by the money and lobbying of the giant pharmaceutical firms. Dr Collier accuses the British government, which he believes has abrogated its responsibilities on drug advertising to the industry, so that the information on labels and package inserts is so limited that it is useless. Dr Collier is a consultant to the World Health Organization and advisor on Drugs Policy to the Shadow Secretary for Health.
