Description
Carl von Clausewitz's The Campaign of 1812 is a penetrating military study of Napoleon's invasion of Russia, tracing the movement from strategic ambition to catastrophic retreat. More than a chronicle of battles, it examines logistics, terrain, command, morale, and the corrosive effects of distance and uncertainty. Written in a sober, analytical style, the work belongs to the literature of Napoleonic military history while anticipating the theoretical concerns of On War: friction, political purpose, and the limits of genius. Clausewitz was not a detached commentator. A Prussian officer formed by the humiliations of Jena and the upheavals of the Napoleonic age, he entered Russian service in 1812 rather than support Prussia's coerced alliance with France. His proximity to events, combined with his later philosophical rigor, gives the book its distinctive authority: eyewitness experience refined by disciplined strategic reflection. This volume is highly recommended to readers of military history, strategy, and political thought. It illuminates why overwhelming force can fail when severed from realistic aims, sustainable logistics, and historical conditions.

Carl Von Clausewitz (1780 - 1831) was a Prussian general and military theorist who paid much attention to war's moral and political aspects. He took part in the Rhine Campaigns when the Prussian army invaded France during the French revolution and in the Napoleonic wars of 1806-1815. His works are based on his personal experiences and observation he made as a participant in the campaigns. Unfortunately, the most important of his books, Von Kriege ("On War"), was unpublished by the time of his death.
