Christo (*1935) und Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) haben einige der atemberaubendsten Kunstwerke des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts geschaffen. Mit ihren Projekten haben sie die traditionelle Vorstellung von Malerei, Skulptur und Architektur radikal in Frage gestellt.

Aufnahmen, die die Künstler während der Arbeit porträtieren, werden um Fotografien aller wichtigen Projekte - Wrapped Coast (1968-69), Valley Curtain (1970-72), Running Fence (1972-76), Surrounded Islands (1980-83), The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1975-85), The Umbrellas (1984-91), Wrapped Reichstag (1971-95) und The Gates (1979-2005) - sowie Abbildungen von Zeichnungen, Collagen und Objekten ergänzt.
Matthias Koddenberg (*1984), Kunsthistoriker und enger Freund der Künstler, hat in langjähriger Arbeit die über 300 hier versammelten, überwiegend unveröffentlichten Aufnahmen und Werkabbildungen zusammengetragen. Viele von ihnen zeigen bisher unbekannte oder verschollen geglaubte Arbeiten, darunter frühe Zeichnungen und Gemälde aus Christos Studienzeit in Bulgarien. Andere dokumentieren temporäre Skulpturen - Wrapped Woman (1962, 1963 und 1968), Wrapped Volkswagen (1963) und Wrapped Tree (1966 und 1969) - oder Werke, die mutwillig zerstört wurden und heute nur noch als Fotografie existieren.
Die Publikation entstand in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Christo und präsentiert neben Aufnahmen namhafter Fotografen - u.?a. von Ugo Mulas, Enzo Sellerio, Harry Shunk und János Kender, Charles Wilp und Wolfgang Volz, der seit 1971 sämtliche Projekte der Künstler dokumentiert - auch Fotos von Weggefährten und Freunden sowie Aufnahmen aus dem Privatarchiv der Künstler. Erzählt wird so nicht nur die außergewöhnliche Geschichte ihrer künstlerischen Zusammenarbeit, sondern auch die ihrer fünf Jahrzehnte dauernden Beziehung.

Christo (*1935) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) have created some of the most visually breathtaking works of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Their projects have transcended the traditional bounds of painting, sculpture and architecture.
This lavishly designed book brings together numerous photographs and studio shots dating from 1949 to 2013, some of them private, thus allowing an intimate behind-the-scenes view of the monumental installations with which Christo and Jeanne-Claude never ceased to amaze the public. Photographs portraying the artists at work are supplemented by pictures of all their major projects-Wrapped Coast (1968-69), Valley Curtain (1970-72), Running Fence (1972-76), Surrounded Islands (1980-83), The Pont Neuf Wrapped (1975-85), The Umbrellas (1984-91), Wrapped Reichstag (1971-95) and The Gates (1979-2005)-as well as reproductions of drawings, collages and objects.
Matthias Koddenberg (*1984), art historian and close friend of the artists, spent many years compiling the over 300, mostly unpublished photographs and illustrations assembled here. Many of them show works that were previously unknown or thought to be lost, including early drawings and paintings dating back to when Christo was still studying art in Bulgaria. Others document temporary sculptures-Wrapped Woman (1962, 1963, and 1968), Wrapped Volkswagen (1963) and Wrapped Tree (1966 and 1969)-or works that were destroyed willfully and only survive as photographs.
The publication was put together in close collaboration with Christo and presents pictures by renowned photographers such as Ugo Mulas, Enzo Sellerio, Harry Shunk and János Kender, Charles Wilp and Wolfgang Volz, who has documented all of the artists' projects since 1971, together with photos by associates and friends as well as pictures from the artists' private archives. So it is not just the extraordinary story of their artistic collaboration that is being told, but also that of their fifty-year-long relationship.
