Description
The scale of the Third Reich's atrocities involving legitimate prisoners of war is far greater than generally accepted. Many instances of the Geneva Convention being flouted on the direct orders of the Nazi high command have come to light and make it evident that the responsibility for the ill-treatment and murder of prisoners of war rested in Berlin. It was therefore to that city that many complaints were directed by the War Office following reports of prisoners being killed or ill-treated in German hands. There were thousands of incidents, so widespread that it would appear that they had to take place with the approval, if not on the instructions of the Nazi government. This text takes the view that the Germans did not abide by the Geneva Convention and that acts of ill-treatment were Nazi government policy rather than the fault of individual guards.
