Using Young Adult Literature in the English Classroom

Providing secondary school English teachers with the guidance on choosing reading selections and developing ideas for teaching them, this text shows how to: use the literature young people want to read as a bridge to teaching the classics; and use multicultural young adult literature as a way to reach a diverse student population. The book places a strong emphasis on the relationship between reading, writing and language skills by highlighting it in activities and ideas throughout the text, and provides a "learning log" in each chapter which involves teachers in text materials. It covers effective ways to organize literature lessons when teaching one book to an entire class, groups of books to a single class, or thematic units, as well as ideas for creating individualized reading lists. Two new chapters feature in this edition, which examine: reader response theory and how it can be used in the classroom; and the use of technology to enhance the teaching of young adult literature.
