John Bunyan (1628 - 88) started work as a tinker but later became a preacher. As a Puritan , he was arrested for holding open-air 'non-conformist' worship services and spent twelve years in Bedford jail. It was there that PILGRIM'S PROGRESS, among other works, was written.
