Fish

In 1991 the close relationship between ecotoxicology and ecophysiology stimulated the editors to organize a symposium on "Fish in Ecotoxicology and Ecophysiology" which was held in Heidelberg on Septermber 25-27 1991. The conference must be seen within a series of scientific meetings on fish ecology in its broader sense. The first such workshop was organized by Dr Rudolph Hofer in Innsbruck in 1985 and focused on applied fish biology. Between 1987 and 1989, further workshops on fish ecology and fish aquaculture were held in Innsbruck, Salzburg and Hamburg. The symposium at Heidelberg not only attracted more than 150 scientists mainly from Austria, France, Germany, Switzerland and Poland, but also provided for the first time a forum for the scientific exchange between ichthyologists from East and West Germany. This book represents a selection of the contributions presented at Heidelberg. Each of the contributions included has been evaluated by at least two international reviewers and been found to include information that should be useful to fellow scientists worldwide.
It is hoped the proceedings will not only serve as an additional landmark in the progres of concerted research in fish ecotoxicology and ecophysiology, but also as a useful reference. In view of the subdisciplines of immediate concern to investigators interested in ecotoxicology and ecophysiology, the contributions included pertain to toxicological test methods, mixed function oxygenases in fish, genetic and cytological biomarkers of pollution, in vitro approaches to ecotoxicology, biomonitoring, fish health and disease, development of fish larvae, acclimation to temperature, nutrition and other environmental stressors, ethology as well as endocrinology of fish.
