Henrietta Branford was born in India, and also lived in Jordan and the New Forest as a child. She began writing late in life, but soon became one of the best-known children's authors of her generation. In 1994 she won the Smarties Prize for DIMANCHE DILLER, and in 1998 she won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize and was shortlisted for the Carnegie. Henrietta died in 1998 and in her memory the Branford Boase Award was created.
