Techno Textiles

This work is a celebration of the way in which the new textile technology is bringing together fashion, design, engineering, science and art, from the USA to Europe and Japan. The work of designers including Donna Karan, Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo, and Alexander McQueen is featured throughout, demonstrating how laboratory discoveries are used for the latest innovations. Microfibres which are so fine that fabrics become windproof and waterproof and yet which allow the skin to "breathe"; engineered textiles combining fabric with glass, ceramics, metal or carbon to produce lightweight hybrids; silicone coatings; and holographic laminates are among the innovations. A reference section includes biographies of designers and makers; explanations of technical terms; a directory of suppliers and developers; a full bibliography and information on exhibitions and where to see contemporary textiles.
