Description
Prostate cancer continues to be a major threat to men's health, being the second most common cancer in men in many countries. Every year it causes approximately 35,000 deaths in Europe and 38,000 in the US, and the incidence is rising. For the foreseeable future, prostate cancer will remain an important part of the urologist's workload and it will therefore be increasingly important that those faced with the difficult clinical decisions, make the right choices. There are no fewer controversies in the science and clinical management of prostate cancer since publication of the first volume in this series Questions and Uncertainties in Prostate Cancer. Time has moved on, some questions have been answered, many remain, and new areas of uncertainty have been uncovered. Challenges in Prostate Cancer provides a new selection of state-of-the-art review articles, each of which addresses a contentious question. Edited by a leading authority in the field, the book contains the contributions of some 24 well-respected clinicians and researchers whose expertise is used to distil the available evidence into practical advice that can be used by urologists in their day-to-day practice.
Reviews / Votes
Reviews of the First Edition rrently there are more questions than answers in prostate cancer and the authors certainly could not have been expected to provide all the solutions for these many difficult issues. They have set out the problems clearly, however, and by doing so set a challenge for all of us in the urological community to provide the evidence based resolution to these many thorny issues by carefully constructed, long-term randomised files." The British Journal of Urology 5-9-96 really enjoyed reading this new monograph on prostate cancer. The editor has chosen a very appropriate approach. Indeed Mr Brian Peeling has selected 20 topics for discussion which reflect the most important features about prostate cancer....I agree with the conclusion of the foreword, so beautifully expressed by John P Blandy: These reviews tackle the issue head on, clearly point out the difficulties and dilemma and deal in depth with both sides of the question. They do not, and cannot be expected to provide any easy answers to such difficult questions, but they should leave the urologist better informed and in a far better position to offer wise counsel. Which words could better summarise the value of this book." European Urology Today 14-10-96 ..Questions and Uncertainties in Prostate Cancer contains useful information and is a helpful resource for understanding many of the controversies in this area." The Lancet 22-2-97 .but first let me say that the first book in the series of two was a great success and it looks to me as if the next one will be in the same league.!"
