Description
Remarkable shifts in the demographic behavior of Americans have occurred over the past two decades. In this process, immigration interacts with fertility and mortality rates to determine the size and composition of the population. Peaceful Invasions outlines arguments for an immigration policy that will not lead to an ever-growing United States population and which will ease the process of cultural adjustment for newcomers. Such an immigration policy is called "liberal limitationist" because one reason for advocating less immigration is to protect United States workers and steer the United States economy toward a high productivity trajectory so there is more income to share with the poor. Co-published with the Center for Immigration Studies.
Reviews / Votes
Public policy is beginning to see immigration as a much more complicated, two-sided issue than in the past offering both dangers and benefits....helps balance the national dialogue. It is an important contribution. -- Richard Lamm, former Governor of Colorado; co-director, Institute for Public Policy Studies, University of Denver * CHOICE * Professor Bouvier is correct in identifying the immigration question as a crucial one for the 1990s.... -- Richard Lamm, former Governor of Colorado; co-director, Institute for Public Policy Studies, University of Denver * Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture * The author is a good scholar and apparently old-fashioned enough to believe that good scholarship still has a role to play in making the world a better place. His book deserves a wide readership. -- Lincoln H. Day, Australian National University * Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture * ...brings many new insights into what is an enormous problem facing our country. One may agree or disagree with his recommendations but we cannot avoid the problem....I recommend that all scholars take this problem seriously and learn from Lee Bouvier's insights. -- Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame * Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture * ...an interesting, well-written, and provocative book...provides a significant addition to the growing literature on the subject. -- Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, President Emeritus, University of Notre Dame * Population and Development Review * ...the book's point of view is forthright, even provocative, and engages a variety of substantive issues in the current immigration debate. * CHOICE * Public policy is beginning to see immigration as a much more complicated, two-sided issue than in the past offering both dangers and benefits....helps balance the national dialogue.
