Starship mechanic Elena Shaw must decide if she can trust the military that abandoned her to save the people she loves in this third installment in the Central Corps series.

A year after leaving the Corps, Elena Shaw, now a civilian carrying supplies to troubled colonies, is reunited with her former Galileo crewmates on the colony of Yakutsk, where starvation and civil war are always one political squabble away. Galileo carries with her the retired Admiral Herrod, working as a diplomat and hoping to broker peace between local factions. Elena has no love lost for Herrod, whom she holds responsible for her exile from Galileo.

When the enigmatic PSI starship Chryse sends an unsolicited emissary to assist Galileo with negotiations, Elena realizes there's more to the conflict than Herrod has shared. And when Chryse's emissary informs them, with absolute certainty, that the galaxy is already at war, Elena confronts Herrod, accusing him of keeping critical secrets from them all.

While Galileo's crew scrambles to keep the local peace in the face of increasing galactic instability, Herrod tells Elena she's the only one who can prevent a deadly attack on Earth. With her experience and civilian status, only she can effectively infiltrate the enemy. The catch? The mission-risky, half-formed, and uncertain-is not one from which Elena will return.
