Description
In this book, Mark Blum offers a critical look at the thought and impact of the late 13th-century Buddhist historian Gyonen (1240-1321) and the emergent Pure Land school of Buddhism founded by Honen (1133-1212). Blum also provides a clear and fully annotated translation of Gyonen's Jodo homon genrusho, the first history of Pure Land Buddhism.
Reviews / Votes
This is a remarkably detailed study of a text that has not been accessible to many nonspecialists and that reveals a good deal about the early Jodo tradition and Japanese Buddhist historiography. Blum is owed much gratitude for not only making the translation available (that alone would have been a service), but doing so in such a thorough and meticulous fashion. The details provided here will be grist for many future studies. * Monumenta Nipponica * The translation is clear and accurate ... Especially helpful for specialists and nonspecialists alike are the extensive notes for virtually all of the texts, personages, places, and buddhological terms appearing in the text ... this is exceptional scholarship with meticulous attention to detail. * Monumenta Nipponica * Mark Blum has done an enormous service in making this text available to a wider audience. He offers the first translation of Genrusho in any modern language, and the quality of scholarship on the text is exemplary. * Monumenta Nipponica *More details
