Description
Aimed at students new to the study of jurisprudence, this title's intention is to explain the often complex and difficult ideas in legal philosophy as clearly as possible, without over-simplifying them to the point of distortion. As well as introducing the reader to the fundamental themes in legal philosophy, it also describes and comments critically on the writing of the foremost legal theorists. The text is supplemented by suggested further readings which contain references to related materials. For the third edition, the book has been extensively revised, taking into account scholarly research and elaborating on many of the key ideas and arguments.
Reviews / Votes
For clarity, fair-mindedness and engaging treatment of the diverse strands of contemporary legal theory, there is no better guide... This book covers more ground with more good sense than many other works do with many more pages.Professor Bix has a genius for writing about the most difficult and frequently arcane aspects of legal theory with a remarkable lightness of touch, an assurance, an authoritativeness, and a degree of accessibility which no other writer in this area can match... whatever your reason for wanting to know more about legal theory, you could not do better than to start with this book. For an overview of jurisprudence that is insightful as well as clear, critical but also generous in its assessments, one can't do better than this book. Martha Minow, Professor of Law, Harvard Law School (on the previous edition).More details
