Tony Birks trained at the Slade School of Art in London as a sculptor and potter and has many years experience of teaching and working in ceramics. His first book The Art of the Modern Potter changed attitudes to ceramics on both sides of the Atlantic. His other books include the biographies of Bernard Leach, Hamada and their circle, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Claudi Casanovas.
