Description
Getting involved in a Multilateral Project financed by the European Union' s Lifelong Learning Programme or another type of European co-operation is not a perilous adventure better to be avoided, as, at first glance, the title Survival Kit may suggest. But many project actors will agree that the management of such projects poses multiple challenges:
- The project must be soundly planned and constantly re-planned
- A special project organisation must be established
- Comprehensive administrative and reporting regulations of the EU funding programme must be complied with
- Intercultural differences and pitfalls have to be dealt with
- An effective project team has to be formed out of a diverse group of people
- Virtual communication and collaboration through ICT tools have to be facilitated to bridge the distance between project partners
- Project activities have to be thoroughly evaluated to ensure high quality
- And project results need to be effectively disseminated and exploited to create a lasting impact on the field concerned.
The Survival Kit provides support in meeting these challenges.
It consists of two parts:
- Guidance publication
- Collection of project management tools: templates, examples and resources like partner agreements, planning forms, reporting sheets, checklists, or tools for evaluation and dissemination.
Both parts can now be downloaded from the project website:
www.european-project-management.eu.
English, (print and PDF), German, French, Italian and Romanian (PDF) language versions are available.

Multilateral Projects are a specific type of co-operative project in the Lifelong Learning Programme, the main EU funding mechanism in the field of education and training. Several institutions from different European countries work together to jointly develop or transfer, test and disseminate innovative education products, e.g. curricula, courses and learning materials. This temporary partnership is funded on the basis of a work programme, and has a clear central figure: the project co-ordinator, who leads the project and is responsible for its success on behalf of the contracting institution.

The publication addresses, above all, project co-ordinators with little or no previous experience with European co-operation. At the same time, the team of authors also hopes to offer some new ideas and practical tools for the experienced European project manager.
