Description
Metallic posts, whether cast or prefabricated, have long been employed for the restoration of endodontically treated teeth owing to their high strength and longevity; however, their elevated elastic modulus compared with dentin predisposes to unfavorable stress concentration, vertical root fractures, compromised esthetics, and difficulty of retrieval. Fiber-reinforced composite posts, composed of glass or quartz fibers in a resin matrix, exhibit an elastic modulus comparable to dentin, thereby promoting more favorable stress distribution, reducing catastrophic failures, and offering superior optical properties compatible with all-ceramic restorations. While metallic posts remain advantageous in high-load posterior situations, fiber posts are particularly indicated in anterior and esthetically demanding cases, aligning with contemporary biomimetic principles that emphasize tooth preservation and repair-friendly failure modes.
