Description
In some ways a sequel to "Amazon", but also a document on the clash of ancient culture with new in South America. Through the eyes of individual Yanomani characters we learn of the manner in which these ancient communities are being gradually obliterated by the invasion of Western man. It is not just our felling of the indigenous rain forest or the selling of their homeland which is ruining their livelihood; we are wreaking havoc in more subtle ways - the introduction of diseases to which they have no immunity, the corrosive influence of western materialism on their younger generation. Berwick, one of the few white men who has gained the trust of the Yanomani, attempts to increase understanding and open dialogue between the two very contrasting cultures. The author also wrote "A Walk Along the Ganges".
