Description
The Clares, practising architecture on the far side of the world, approach their work with a philosophical position that produces beautiful, climatically responsive, low-impact, environmentally sensitive buildings. They have achieved this working not from a body of widely accepted theory and practice but from first principles, applying native can-do empiricism to their designs. Their buildings made in partnership with clients are demonstrations of their architectural philosophy. Almost from the inception of their practice, their work has been recognised and commended by their peers with architectural awards. Over the years their elegant and climatically sensitive buildings have been the subject of exhibitions, magazine articles, both popular and professional, and several books. The projects in this book are selected, described and interpreted by Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper, the editors of UME magazine, and are published here as a book-length edition of UME magazine.

Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper both have formative links to Queensland, Australia, but spent many years away before returning. Haig left for England in the late 1960s and completed his studies at the Architectural Association School in London. During the 1970s, Jackie worked in the AA's Communications Unit for seven years during the school's most dazzling period. In 1986, they returned to Australia, where they continued collaborating as architectural editors, critics, writers and publishers, and in 1996 launched UME magazine. (UME and International Architect are available as free downloads: www.umemagazine.com). Haig Beck and Jackie Cooper's joint output over forty years of writing includes books, chapters, articles and critical reviews, and in particular books on (and with) Glenn Murcutt, Denton Corker Marshall, Lindsay and Kerry Clare, Brit Andresen and Peter O'Gorman, Architectus, Cox Rayner, Tract Landscape Architects, graphic designer Garry Emery and sculptor Akio Makigawa. They are both visiting professors in the Abedian School of Architecture, Bond University. UME continues.
