Description
After the huge success of the first volume of Sutton Coldfield in archive photographs, this second selection continues the story, bringing the town's history up to the end of the 1980s. With the ever-increasing development of the area, the aim is to show how much has survived and how much has changed. Most of the photographs included are of historic and nostalgic interest. They are a record of many of the events and issues which have evoked public interest, concern, sympathy and other mixed emotions over the past century.
Sutton Coldfield is unusual in that although its residential population has rapidly increased, it includes significant areas of open countryside. It is now the second largest shopping area in Birmingham and despite the overspill building programmes and the prospect of the Northern Relief Road, it still retains a sense of individuality.
Drawing on the extensive photographic archives of Sutton Coldfield Central Library where the author works, this fascinating collection of over 200 old images will appeal to all those who know and love this unique area.
