Description
Studies on the relation between Language, identity and nation (building) represent a long tradition in linguistic, cultural and political research. In this interdisciplinary anthology, we focus on different aspects of how Language is used to shape a nation; by retaining a national identity in the context of emigration, by Measures taken to change an existing nation into a new one, by introducing a discourse designed to re-establish a putatively lost nation. Finally, we discuss how nation and identity are shaped in a modern multi-ethnic, multi-lingual and multi-cultural society. The anthology contains articles in English, French and German from political science, history, linguistics, literature and translatology and is written by researchers based in Finland, Greece, Norway and the United Kingdom.

Overall, I found the volume very interesting for various reasons. First, each contribution gives access to a complex context, being accessible without being simplistic. This facilitates international comparisons among the contexts described by Contributors, as between these and readers' research context background. Second, through its international scope, Language and Nation. Crossroads and Connections covers the various dimensions of how Language may be linked to nation. Third, the detailed historical and national backgrounds enable to situate contemporary national identity issues. Sigmund Kvam studierte Germanistik, Anglistik und Geschichte in Trondheim und Freiburg. Nach einem Cand. philol.-Abschluss an der Universität Trondheim promovierte er in Fach Vergleichende Germanische Philologie an der Universität Freiburg. Er war an der Østfold University College und der Universität Oslo im Bereich der deutschen Sprachwissenschaft und ÜberSetzungswissenschaft tätig und arbeitet seit 2007 als Professor für deutsche Sprachwissenschaft und ÜberSetzungswissenschaft am Østfold University College in Halden in Norwegen.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anastasia Parianou lehrt ÜberSetzungswissenschaft an der Ionischen Universität
(Korfu/Griechenland).

Wladimir Chávez Vaca obtained his Phd in Humanities at the University of Bergen (Norway). He also holds a Bachelor Degree in Communication and Literature from Pontificia Universidad Católica (Ecuador) and a Master in Fine Arts from New York University (USA). Currently, he serves as Associate Professor at the Department of Languages, Literature and Culture at Østfold University College (Norway). He is author of several articles published in scholarly journals such as Iberoromania, Dialogía, Variaciones Borges and Revista Caracteres.

Franck Orban holds a doctoral degree in French civilization from the University of Oslo (Norway). In his dissertation, Titled France and power: perspectives and foreign policy strategies (1945-1995), he has analyzed the relationship between French ambitions in foreign policy with France's position as a regional power. He is an associate professor at the Østfold University College, Norway. In 2016, he launched AreaS, a transdisciplinary research group that focuses on contemporary challenges to democracy. His research interests are French politics, European integration, populism and extremism.

Nach typografischer Ausbildung und mehrjähriger Berufspraxis Abitur am Abendgymnasium Stuttgart. 1972-1979 Studium an der Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel und der Åbo-Akademi in Turku (Finnland) mit Abschluss Magister artium bzw. Fil.mag. in den Fächern Nordische Philologie, Germanische Philologie, Volkskunde und Nordische Folkloristik. Dezember 2005 finnischer Doktorgrad an der Universität Tampere (Dissertation: "Gut zum Druck"? - Typografie und Layout im ÜberSetzungsprozess) im Fach Translationswissenschaft (Finnisch-Deutsch). 1979-1981 Lektor am Spracheninstitut Tampere. Ab 1982 bis zur Emeritierung im Jahr 2010 Hochschullehrer für Finnisch-Deutsche Translation an der Universität Tampere. Zahlreiche Veröffentlichungen zum Thema Typografie und Translation sowie eine Reihe von translationsdidaktischen Aufsätzen und Beiträgen zu berufspraktischen Fragen im Translationswesen. Sokrates-Gastdozent an mehreren europäischen Universitäten. Fortbildungsveranstaltungen für translatorische Berufsverbände in Deutschland und Finnland.

Dr Vilelmini Sosoni is Lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University. In the past, she taught Specialised Translation in the UK at the University of Surrey, the University of Westminster and Roehampton University, and in Greece at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Institut Français d' Athènes. She also has extensive industrial experience having worked as translator, editor and subTitler. Her research interests lie in the areas of the Translation of Institutional Texts, Corpus Linguistics, Machine Translation (MT) and AVT. She is a founding member of the Research Lab "Language and Politics" of the Ionian University and a member of the "Centre for Research in Translation and Transcultural Studies" of Roehampton University. She has participated in EU-funded research projects and has published articles in international journals and edited volumes.
