Description
Lives of the Caesars is a collection of biographical essays about Rome's most fascinating and influential emperors, from Augustus to Justinian. Written by authoritative experts in an accessible and lively style, this book examines 12 individuals who each placed their own distinctive stamp on one of the most significant periods in European history.
Each chapter presents a biographical look at the familiar personalities, idiosyncrasies and problems associated with the reign of these powerful men. Replete with illustrations, a timeline of Roman history, and a chart of the Julio-Claudian, Flavian and Severan dynasties, Lives of the Caesars is an engaging introduction to Roman imperial history.
Reviews / Votes
"Barrett is the right person to edit this collection: he is an accomplished biographer of early Roman imperial personalities ... .A time line, family trees, informative maps, a few significant illustrations, useful glossary, and an adequate index fortify the text. Recommended." (Choice Reviews, October 2008) "A great treat for those who already know the general outline of the history of the Roman Empire. Excellent writers [and] well-planned. A coherent unit."
