Description
As a child, Amelia was known for adventurous spirit. She became interested in flying in Toronto where she worked as a Red Cross nurse aide at the end of World War I. She took her first flight in 1920, and was hooked. She saved all her money for flying lessons and received her pilot's license at the age of 25. In 1932, Amelia became famous as the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She used her celebrity to help other women to fly and set many other aviation records. She remains exceptionally well known today, not only as a trailblazing aviation pioneer, but as an icon for women's rights and an enduring mystery.
